Dicembre 1897, Parigi. Edmond Rostand non ha ancora trent'anni, ma ha già due figli e molte ansie. Non ha scritto nulla per due anni. In preda alla disperazione, offre al grande Constant Coquelin una nuova commedia, una commedia eroica, in versi, per le vacanze. Unica preoccupazione: non è ancora stata scritta. Ignorando i capricci delle attrici, le richieste dei suoi produttori corsi, la gelosia di sua moglie, le storie del cuore del suo migliore amico e la mancanza di entusiasmo di tutti quelli che lo circondano, Edmond inizia a scrivere questo pezzo che nessuno crede. Per ora, ha solo il titolo: "Cyrano de Bergerac".
